Domestic flight comparison: Australia 2026
Australia's domestic aviation market in 2026 is effectively a two-airline race between Qantas and Virgin Australia, with Jetstar as the budget arm of the Qantas group and a much-reduced Rex serving regional routes after its 2024 administration. Here's how to actually choose between them — and where you can save money once you know what each fare type really includes.
The four carriers, briefly
Qantas
Most reliable on-time performance of the major domestics, according to the BITRE annual data. Standard Economy includes 23 kg checked baggage, seat selection, and Qantas Points earning. Best for: business travel, frequent flyers, anyone redeeming Qantas points.
Virgin Australia
Re-emerged in 2024 with a tightened network and a new Velocity loyalty proposition. Standard Economy ("Choice") includes 23 kg checked, seat selection and snack/soft drink. Their lower "Lite" fares strip baggage. Overweight baggage on domestic flights is $65 per piece — same as Qantas. Best for: leisure travellers who care about cabin service and don't need lounge access.
Jetstar
Wholly-owned by Qantas. The headline fare is cabin baggage only (7 kg). Adding 20 kg checked is typically $35–$50 each way; selecting a seat $5–$15. Snacks and drinks sold onboard. Useful for one-way regional or beach hops where the lead-in price is half of Qantas. Be honest about the actual total before you book — once you add bag, seat and a coffee, Jetstar is often within $20 of Virgin Choice.
Rex
Operates a smaller regional network in 2026 after exiting capital-city jet routes during its 2024 administration. Strong on Saab 340 turboprop services into towns the majors don't fly. Less relevant for east-coast triangle (BNE-SYD-MEL) bookings — but check it for routes like Wagga, Mildura, Mount Gambier and Burnie.
Real cost comparison: Sydney → Melbourne
| Fare | Headline | + 20 kg bag | + seat select | Loyalty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas Economy | $169 | included | included | Yes (QFF) |
| Virgin Choice | $159 | included | included | Yes (Velocity) |
| Virgin Lite | $119 | +$30 | +$8 | Yes (Velocity) |
| Jetstar Starter | $89 | +$45 | +$10 | QFF (limited) |
Indicative pricing only. Once you add a checked bag and seat, Jetstar Starter at $89 becomes $144 — close to Virgin Choice at $159 with no extras. The Jetstar saving is real if you genuinely travel cabin-baggage-only.
Five rules that will save you money
- Always price the total, not the headline. Add bag, seat and a snack and the rankings often flip.
- Tuesday/Wednesday departures are the cheapest mid-week slots on every domestic carrier — Mondays and Fridays carry a business-traveller premium.
- Book 4–8 weeks out for leisure routes, 2–3 weeks for business routes. Last-minute fares on BNE–SYD–MEL routinely double inside seven days.
- Use the right loyalty currency. Velocity Points cap awards more aggressively than Qantas Points but transfer in from KrisFlyer; Qantas Points have wider domestic availability but tighter international partner space.
- Don't sleep on Jetstar Plus / Club bundles. If you're flying Jetstar twice in a year and bringing bags both times, the annual subscription is sometimes cheaper than two pairs of à la carte add-ons.
One more thing: regional routes
If you're flying somewhere like Tamworth, Mildura, or Burnie, ignore the BNE–SYD–MEL playbook. Rex is often the only direct option, and the price gap to a Qantas Link or Virgin codeshare can be $100+. Always check Rex first for non-capital destinations.
